Time marches on, and life continues to get busier. Family, work, and everything in between. You read constantly about side-hustles and having an entrepreneurial mindset; escaping the 9-5 or being your own boss….ad infinitum. After a while, you find that nobody is really saying anything substantial or very useful — just more noise adding to the incessant machinations of information overload. In this day and age of millennials killing industry after industry trying to disrupt the status quo by moving fast and breaking things, it all tends to get a bit exhausting. Where does it stop? What was life even like before we were all plugged into the social media matrix juggernaut?
Now god is dead. We are the gods. Everyone walks around today believing they are the greatest or trying their best to be. Obviously we should be shooting for the stars. Obviously we should be chasing our dreams and getting rich or trying to be famous. After all, we are nothing if we have nothing right? But what becomes of humanity if it doesn’t even matter whether we ignore the truth or believe in lies?
My son will be 1 very soon. Everywhere I look I can’t help now but see the next generation growing up. What do I do to ensure he grows to be a good man? What do I teach him? How do I teach him? At the end of the day, I think the most honest answer I can think of is that nobody really knows.
Maybe the answer is simple. Be a good example for the kind of person I want my kids to be. They don’t do what we say after all, they do what we do. The human condition means failure is always an option, so if I can teach him to pick himself up time and again, I think he’ll be alright. As long as he values growth in all it’s forms and tries his best regardless of the outcome, I believe he can be wholly capable of doing anything.
When all is said and done, ultimately it’ll be up to him. I hope he’ll be up for the challenge.
